SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine

Client: State University of New York at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY

RBSD designed an addition and renovations to expand and create a unified architectural identity for the School of Dental Medicine.  The project added 31,950 square feet of new space, including dental operatories and clinics; central sterile supply; ceramics, research and technicians laboratories; surgery and radiology facilities; and a new library and lecture hall. Renovated spaces included 29,350 square feet of teaching laboratories, lunchroom facilities, and existing operatories.

The additions connected three separate buildings, creating a unified architectural appearance as well as an interior circulation path, which increased the efficiency of the School's operations.  The connection between two of the buildings, which were on different levels, took advantage of the natural slope to create enhanced sightlines for the lecture rooms. Materials were anodized metal panels and tinted glass to match the existing metal panel and glass architectural vocabulary, with sepia‑toned ground face block in the new entrance, library, and lecture halls to delineate these spaces. The entrance features a gabled, rectangular skylight; a pyramidal skylight over the library's main reading area brings natural light into the space.
