Insurance companies have recently begun to recognize the severe health crisis created by obesity during recent years. Acknowledging that obesity is a health-related issue rather than a cosmetic one, insurance companies are beginning to pay for both surgical and medically supervised non-surgical treatment for individuals whose health is severely jeopardized by their weight. This has led to the need for separate bariatric care facilities to better serve clients who need medical treatment and counseling.
Brookdale Hospital Medical Center has recently renovated a suite in an existing off-site medical office building in Brooklyn, NY, to create a respectful, warm, comforting environment for patients undergoing a medically supervised weight loss program before, after, or in lieu of surgical treatment such as gastric bypass surgery. RBSD provided architectural space planning and interior design selection of finishes, fixtures and furniture for the new bariatric care center, which includes two consultation rooms, two exam rooms, and a large conference room that will be used for seminars and group therapy sessions.
Because the patients will need to schedule regular visits to the bariatric center for at least 11 months, the aesthetic goal for the design was to make the space feel more spa-like than clinical. This luxurious atmosphere was achieved by using dark trim, a palette of light and dark greens, and a variety of colorful patterns. The final touches such as artwork, plants and flowers, selected by the program's administrator, add even more opulence to the public spaces such as the waiting room and the conference room.
The result is a welcoming, inviting facility in which medical supervision and education as well as emotional support are provided for those who are embarking upon the difficult journey to achieve a healthy weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. |
