Client: The Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Jamaica, NY

Departing from the design signature of Jamaica Hospital, RBSD’s design for Jamaica Hospital’s $32 million new nursing home provides a residential atmosphere. Completed in June 2009, the four-story nursing home features two 40-bed nursing units on each of the upper three floors. The nursing units are wrapped around a four-story atrium, which creates a bright, sunlit entrance and gathering space. The day rooms and dining rooms on each floor provide glassed-in balconied spaces overlooking the atrium.

The bi-axial plan that is typically well suited for suburban sites and large tracts of land needed to be modified to better suit the urban site of Jamaica Hospital’s campus. The design team opted for a "modified" bi-axial design that uses an offset configuration to replicate the privacy and space-related benefits of "L-shaped" bi-axial rooms within the recta-linear building necessary to fit the existing space constraints. This modified bi-axial configuration of the two-bedded rooms affords each patient his or her own personal space and privacy.
